Conference, meeting and seminar room acoustics are designed for both high speech intelligibility (STI ≥ 0.60) and no leakage outside the room (Rw ≥ 42 dB). The right meeting environment is built with acoustic ceilings, wall absorbers, certified acoustic doors, double glazing and sound masking. RT60 target: 0.4-0.6 seconds.
What is meeting room acoustics?
In modern offices, meeting room acoustics has two interlinked goals: speech is clearly heard inside, and conversations do not leak outside. Insufficient acoustics let the meeting bleed into the next office (privacy issue) while internal reverberation degrades speech intelligibility (productivity issue).
Typical problems
- Meeting audio leaking outside (privacy)
- Internal reverberation, voices overlapping
- Distorted remote audio in video conferences
- HVAC noise breaking attention
- Sound bleed in glass-partitioned meeting rooms
Solution components
1. Partition wall (Block)
Multi-layer plasterboard + rock wool fill, Rw 42-48 dB.
2. Acoustic ceiling (Absorb)
Mineral fibre or rock wool suspended ceiling, NRC 0.80+. Brings RT60 to 0.4-0.6 s.
3. Wall absorber panels
Fabric-faced acoustic panels on the opposite wall — kill the first reflection.
4. Acoustic door
Certified Rw 32+ dB instead of standard doors (Rw 22-25).
5. Acoustic glazing
Double or laminated acoustic glass (Rw 32-40 dB) for glass-partitioned rooms.
6. Sound masking (optional)
Pink-noise masking in the adjacent space where privacy is critical.
STI — speech intelligibility metric
STI (Speech Transmission Index) ranges from 0 to 1. Above 0.60 is "good", above 0.75 "excellent". Minimum 0.60 in a meeting room. Calculated together with RT60 — too low RT60 can also affect STI.
Target performance
- RT60: 0.4-0.6 seconds
- STI: 0.60+
- Partition Rw: 42-48 dB
- Acoustic door Rw: 32+ dB
- NC (background): 35
Time and cost
A single meeting room takes 3-5 days. In offices with multiple rooms we work in weekly stages. Investment scales with room size and privacy requirements.
