Cinema and home-theatre acoustics is a comprehensive design that ensures the surround system works correctly, outside sound does not leak in, and low-frequency (LFE / sub-woofer) sound does not transmit to the apartment below. Floating screed, multi-layer walls, certified acoustic doors, broadband absorber panels and bass traps target RT60 0.4-0.6 s and Rw 55-65 dB.
What is cinema acoustics?
Cinema acoustics is a sensitive design discipline where the surround sound systems (5.1, 7.1, Atmos) must work correctly and where both sound insulation and room acoustics are combined. Outside sound leaking in spoils the film experience; LFE bass leaking to the lower floor or neighbour creates complaints.
Cinema venue types
- Professional cinema hall (50-300 seats)
- Private home theatre
- Residential mini cinema room
- Hotel cinema / projection room
- Corporate / showroom demo cinema
- Educational cinema (university, academy)
Low-frequency (bass) control — the critical element
The cinema system's LFE channel (sub-woofer) produces high-level bass in 30-120 Hz. This low frequency easily transmits via structural vibration; standard insulation builds are insufficient. In our practice we apply double-leaf walls + bass traps + floating screed as standard.
Build details
- Floating concrete screed (sub-woofer vibration control)
- Double-leaf wall (for Rw 60+ dB)
- Vibroacoustic suspended ceiling
- Acoustic door (Rw 38+ dB)
- Broadband absorber on the inside
- Bass traps in the corners
- Ceiling fabric (acoustic-filled cloth)
- Absorber fill behind surround speakers
Room acoustics — surround optimisation
Cinema room acoustics should be in 0.4-0.6 s RT60. Too low (under 0.3) kills surround immersion; too high (above 0.8) hurts speech intelligibility. In our practice we calculate panel quantity and placement by simulation according to room volume.
Target performance
- Sound insulation Rw: 55-65 dB
- RT60: 0.4-0.6 s
- NC: 25-30 (quiet background)
- Bass-frequency reduction: -25 dB (structural vibration)
Lead time and cost
Home theatre 3-5 weeks. Professional cinema 8-16 weeks. Investment is calculated alongside surround equipment with the value contribution of acoustic design.
