What is generator sound insulation?
Generator-room sound insulation is a comprehensive acoustic-enclosure design that brings the engine and exhaust noise plus vibration of the generator under control and prevents leakage into adjacent rooms and the environment. Unlike residential insulation, continuous high dB, temperature, vibration and airflow conditions are addressed simultaneously.

How is the multi-layer enclosure built?
- Existing concrete wall + vibroacoustic hangers
- Steel frame with 80 mm high-density rock-wool fill
- Two layers of acoustic plasterboard at differing thickness
- Elastomeric membrane (Tecsound) between the boards
- Sound-absorbing acoustic panel on the inside (echo control)
- Acoustic door (Rw 38-44 dB certified)

Air inlet/outlet — the critical point
An insulated wall delivering 60 dB performance drops to 25 dB at a bare 30 cm ventilation opening. Splitter silencers at air inlets/outlets are therefore mandatory; a correctly designed silencer adds 25-40 dB without obstructing flow.
Vibration — never overlook it
Even when airborne sound is controlled, generator vibration travels through the structure and is felt as a "rumble" upstairs. Structural transmission is cut not by acoustic panels but by correctly chosen elastomer vibration isolators. A wrong isolator can resonate at the operating frequency and amplify vibration.

Field story
For a 1250 kVA diesel generator at a logistics facility in Istanbul, we applied multi-layer wall + 80 mm rock wool + double plasterboard + intermediate membrane + interior polyester panel + 2 m splitter silencer + reactive exhaust silencer + Rw 44 dB acoustic door. The final measurement documented 48 dB net reduction.
Lead time and cost
A typical generator-room application runs 2-4 weeks. Investment depends on enclosure size, silencer dimensions and target dB. Compared with the environmental-fine risk, the investment pays back quickly.
